Hi,
Great question! Ophiopogon japonicus is a very low-maintenance, hands-off plant, and regular trimming is not required.
In most landscapes, you can simply let it grow naturally. If the foliage ever looks tired or winter-worn, you can give it a light cutback in late winter or very early spring before new growth starts—but this is optional, not a must.
Many gardeners never trim it at all and still get excellent results. Once established, it’s one of those “plant it and enjoy it” groundcovers.
Please let us know if you’d like tips on spacing or mass planting—happy to help!
