Can you divide 3.5" pots before planting? Chrysogonum v. 'Pierre' (3.5 inch pot)

Goldenstar sounds like the perfect plant for my ground cover needs. Given I have such a large space, I was curious if I could immediately divide the 3.5" pots to reduce cost? Also, as of May 17th, north of Atlanta, I might be a bit late getting this into the ground prior to some heat. I have no issues watering. Should I wait till the fall instead?

Good questions -
Immediately divide plants in the 3.5" pot?
Possibly. Typically, it would be recommended to wait until plants mature couple of years before dividing.

Should you wait until fall to plant? Fall planting may conserve water, otherwise it is a personal choice.
